History

Founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, the university began lectures that same year, with its official inauguration following in 1737. Established in keeping with Enlightenment ideals, it became one of the pioneering institutions to free scientific research from church censorship.

In the 19th century, the university counted mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss and the Brothers Grimm among its faculty. In 1837, seven professors — including the Brothers Grimm — were removed from their posts after protesting the King of Hanover's expansion of his powers; the episode became known in history as the "Göttingen Seven" (Göttinger Sieben).

Göttingen is associated with 45 Nobel laureates, from quantum mechanics pioneer Max Born to mathematician Emmy Noether, 14 of whom were honored for work carried out at Göttingen itself. The oldest university in the state of Lower Saxony, Göttingen today sits at the heart of a city that carries the nickname "City of Science," with around 26,000 students.
