History
LMU was founded in 1472 in Ingolstadt by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria. It moved to Landshut in 1800 and then to its current home in Munich in 1826 — the "Ludwig-Maximilians" in its name honors the two rulers associated with that journey.
One of Europe's oldest universities, LMU has been home to numerous Nobel laureates throughout its history, including Wilhelm Röntgen, Max Planck, and Werner Heisenberg. Members of the White Rose (Weiße Rose), the student resistance group that opposed the Nazi regime during World War II, were also LMU students.
Today, with a strong faculty in medicine, law, natural sciences, and social sciences, LMU teaches on a historic campus stretching along Ludwigstraße in the heart of Munich.
