History
TUM was founded in 1868 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as the Polytechnische Schule München. Its name changed several times over the decades, becoming the Technische Hochschule München in 1901 and finally the Technische Universität München in 1970.
Today the university is a member of TU9, the alliance of Germany's nine leading technical universities, and holds "University of Excellence" status from the federal government. It maintains a comprehensive research infrastructure across engineering, computer science, natural sciences, and medicine.
TUM's campuses span three main areas: the historic main campus in central Munich, the Garching campus focused on natural sciences and engineering, and the Weihenstephan campus focused on agriculture and life sciences. The university has produced numerous Nobel laureates throughout its history.
